In his film PASSION - between revolt and resignation (LINK), Christian Labhart asks what has happened to the utopian ideas of the 68er generation. Is all hope lost? The essay film shows the filmmakers individual biography in reflection of global events. We see spectacular images with quotes from philosophers and authors. F.e. Arundhati Roy on the climate crisis and in another sequence Franco Berardi (film at 41,42’ – 43.05’) who sees hope in poetry. Japanese poetry was deeply inspired by Chinese literature during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) from where eventually and centuries later the uniquely Japanese haiku form had evolved. One of the great haiku masters is Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) who is known for lifting haiku to a new level of sensitivity. Haiku poets observe the natural world in relation to humans. Experiences of the moment are described with the intention of finding ever-new perspectives. The importance of locations is another feature specific for haiku. UGS are cultured nature spaces. Public parks are intended for rambling, play and relaxation. As humans we are space. Public spheres, like parks, can be described as “sphere of private people coming together as a public” (Habermas 2001:27).
Haiku is a thoughtful poetry form, designed to help us understand our place in the universe. It has no pretence, is contemporary yet classic. Haiku is global, reminding us how similar and how different we are as humans in the observations that we make of this world, no matter where on the planet we live. Haiku helps us see the world from different angles. It is a way of reinventing our thinking. By writing haiku, I have to view the world with new eyes every day. This I also aim to bring to my readers. A good haiku feels fresh sometimes poems can be 400 years old, but read like they could have been written today. Scandinavian aesthetics are in many ways similar to the Japanese. An appreciation of the functional and the minimalist. My haiku are often simple and matter of fact. They aim to be a shell in which the reader can put their own experiences, their references and emotions. Haiku poetry is art, and if it is not art, then it is also not haiku? - Anna Maris
